Oil Spill and the Climate bill

I’ve already written about the Gulf oil spill, but it’s an important enough topic that I’m writing another post about it, this time specifically about the
climate change bill and its chances of being passed in Washington. Apparently, the oil disaster may make it even harder to pass this bill. Basically, the only thing keeping climate change legislation alive was the votes it would recieve because it expanded offshore drilling. Now that supporting it would be political suicide for legislators that have a strong environmentalist bases and congress is even
more polarized, it will be difficult or impossible to stop a filibuster from the proponents of offshore drilling that will be lost if the bill no longer expands it.
If that makes no sense to you, don’t worry. You’re not alone. That’s American politics in a nutshell– corrupt, confusing and complicated. Even if the spill drums up environmentalism (which it seems to be doing) and said environmentalism is directed to support the passage of the bill, it will still be more difficult to pass than before this disaster! I don’t know about anyone else, but to me, that seems to defy logic… Of course, at this point, should we really be surprised?

Your post really points out to me how much the enviromental descisions are influenced by politics and not based on what’s best for our planet and the wildlife that lives here.
